Nissan have teamed up with Arctic Trucks, specialists in polar expedition vehicles to prepare a Nissan Ariya for a gruelling 27,000 pole to pole trek to demonstrate the capabilities of an EV and highlight positive action against climate change.

This epic adventure has been four years in the making – but modifications to car have been intentionally minimal to show what is genuinely possible in a relatively standard but very capable factory vehicle.

There are no changes to the battery or powertrain. The most obvious visual difference is the adaption of the suspension and addition of 39-inch tyres. When coupled with e-4ORCE, Nissan’s advanced electric all-wheel-control technology, these modifications will enable the expedition car to tackle extreme terrains whilst giving co-drivers, husband and wife team, Chris and Julie Ramsey the necessary comfort and control to travel from the North to the South Pole.

There’s also the addition of a portable, renewable energy unit that will be used to charge the Ariya in the polar regions. The towable prototype includes a packable, lightweight wind turbine and solar panels that will take advantage of high winds and long daylight hours to provide charge for the EV’s battery when Chris and Julie stop to rest.

Plus, an integrated coffee machine (who wouldn’t need caffeine on an epic adventure), a weather station and a drone for capturing amazing videography of this life-changing experience.
